Old English Sheepdogs - General Information
Old English Sheepdogs are a large, squarely proportioned dog with an abundant, but not excessive shaggy coat. These qualities, combined with agility of these dogs, fit them for the challenging tasks required of a shepherd's or drover's dog.

An important breed characteristic is their top line that slopes upward from the withers to the loin. The small ears lie flat, and their eyes are brown or blue or one of each. This breed is either born tailless (as the name Bobtail implies) or the tail is completely amputated. The Old English Sheepdog is well insulated by its long double coat with coarse guard hair and a soft downy undercoat. The accepted coat colors are blue, gray, blue gray or blue merle, often with white markings. The Old English Sheepdog is known for its loud and distinctive bark that has a loud-ringing sound to it.
Height: 22-24 inches in dogs and 20-22 inches in bitches
Weight: Dogs weigh from 65 pounds and bitches from 60 pounds
Old English Sheepdogs - Breed History
The Old English Sheepdog's origin is far from being clear. The early 19th century is considered the time of the breed's development. "The drover's dog," admittedly having originated in the Southwestern Counties of England, and was used for driving sheep and cattle to market. Their nickname "Bob" or "Bobtail" refers to their docked tails.
There are suggestions that the Old English Sheepdog was developed from the Scottish Bearded Collie. The Russian Owtchar could have been one of the Bobtail's ancestors as well. The origin of Old English Sheepdogs remains a matter of interest and research nowadays.
